Yes, Templar student residence is accredited by NSFAS and SPU.

Yes, Templar provides free wi-fi data access, within reason.

The intention is to provide adequate data volume and speed for school purposes, but not for unlimited social media activities or streaming movies.

You will receive the Wi-Fi password once you have completed your check in on Fundi, have carried out the Check-In Inspection and submitted the Room Condition report.  If you require any additional assistance, do consult the Res Administrator.

You need to bring a pillow, towels, bedding, cooking utensils, pots, pans, dish cloth, toilet paper, own sanitary supplies.

Once you have followed the application process, submitted the required documents and paid the administration fee, you will be advised if your application was successful.  Your room allocation and roommate details (where applicable) will be communicated with you at or before your arrival.

Yes – we have a laundry area with washers and dryers available.

Residents are not charged to make use of these facilities but will be fined if they are found to be using Templar facilities to do laundry for people who are not residents of Templar.

Please note that we do not provide detergents, powders, or cleaning supplies.

Every bedroom in the residence has a bed, a mattress, a study desk, a chair, a lamp, and a cupboard with shelves and hanging space.

Since the kitchens each have a refrigerator, hot plates, and microwaves, we do not allow students to bring these appliances with them.

We have a state-of-the-art control access security system, operated by means of facial recognition.  The turnstiles at the main entrance will open for you, once your photograph has been captured on the security database.  This is part of the check-in process.

We ask that you vacate your bedroom in two situations: upon the expiration of the lease, or for any necessary cleaning and maintenance purposes. Other than that, you are welcome to stay in residence during the mid-year holiday break, provided this is communicated timeously.

Should you wish to leave your belongings with us over the December break you would need to follow the standard pre-booking process with the residence administrator.

• Click on ‘Submit’ to finalize and send your application.

We allow prospective applicants to register for accommodation from 1 October for the following academic year. Bear in mind that you might lose out if you wait until the start of the semester to make your reservation.  The Early birds catches the worm!

• Students must pay a registration / administration fee of R500 each year.
• Students who want a single room must be prepared to pay “top up” rent for that privilege. The additional amount is R500 per month for 2025, and discounted options are available for early payment.
• No breakage deposit fee
• Fines are levied for lost keys, unacceptable behaviour etc and students are responsible for the cost of repairing / replacing anything that they damage. (fair wear and tear excepted)

• Heating or cooking appliances such as microwave, heaters, kettles, bulky furniture.
• Weapons of any kind
• Alcohol
• Drugs or any other illegal substances

You may bring other appliances such as fans, a small refrigerator or small items of furniture, subject to prior written approval from Templar Office.

No, Templar Residence does not provide meals to students. However, our students have the facilities to cook in the shared kitchens with their own pots and utensils.

Students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms throughout their stay, and upon check out.

Our residence cleaners are an important part of the staff, and clean the common areas (kitchens, passages, bathrooms etc) daily, except Sundays.  However, in line with our Student Living Guidelines, all residents are expected to leave the shared facilities in the condition they would like to find them.

Yes, regular inspections of every room are carried out, and are mandatory.  We wish to provide the best service possible and are concerned about the conditions in which you live, specifically related to any maintenance that may become necessary, but we also check on hygiene, health and safety issues.  Planned inspections will be communicated timeously.

Yes, to guarantee that our students get sufficient sleep and have enough time to study in peace, Templar Residence has a no-noise policy from 22:00 to 8:00 daily.  The no-noise policy may be modified as appropriate and necessary during exam periods.

Indeed. Templar Residence hosts events to help our students connect with and get to know fellow-students. The organised events range in nature from financial literacy workshops to residence braais or sports events.  Keep an eye out for details of those events on the notice boards / social media.

Templar student residence is within walking distance of SPU (approximately 1km). It is about a 15 min walk or a 3 min drive.

Usually we assign your room-mate (based on age, year of study, and the course for which you are registered).

However, you have an option at the application stage to nominate your preferred room mate, and we will try to manage the room allocations with that in mind.

Within the first month of moving in, you are permitted to switch rooms ONCE only, but only after completing a request and being authorised to do so.  Each student swopping will need to pay R100 for the associated administration.

Thereafter, any room swops will only be considered upon the payment of a R250 fee for each person moving.

Please note that each party involved in any unauthorized room changes or swaps shall be fined R500!

You are not permitted to stick, drill, or otherwise attach anything to any of the walls or doors in your bedroom.

We have a member of staff assigned to assist and support students, to provide a first level of guidance and where necessary to refer you to the appropriate resources.

The standard rental contract is for 10 months: February to December each year.   If you are unhappy at Templar, or deregister from the university, we do allow cancellation subject to ONE FULL calendar months’ notice.

Yes, residents can sign their guests in, on the visitors register at the security gate. (usually limited to a maximum of 2 visitors at a time, unless approved by the office).  Visitors must leave their student card/ Identity card at the gate and can retrieve it when they are signed out again.  Visitors’ hours are detailed in the Student Living Guidelines.
